"This place has deep roots for me personally – I grew up backpacking and camping in these mountains. The rich, complex aromatics sing fond memories for me and I love sharing that experience with people. I think this is our most popular seasonal release because it really taps into people’s souls – all those yummy Conifers, that cool, rich smell of late summer air. It’s intoxicating. Makes me swoon just thinking about it…" Hall Newbegin, late founder of Juniper Ridge
My brother Hall and I grew up in the shadow of Mt Hood. We watched longingly whenever the rain would stop in Portland for a brief respite, in the distance “Hood” waited for us, the destination of days spent skiing, summer family camping trips, and teenage trysts to leave town.
On a summer day as I hiked around the base of Mt. Hood near Timberline lodge, listening to the snow trickle into streams, smelling the fresh growth, the mud, the glaring sun bouncing off the glaciers, the incredible view. It is a humbling experience to be so close to a mountain in the warmth of summer, to feel the top is within easy reach, it looks so close as you wander the edge of the forest line. The sublime beauty of watching the sleeping giant basking in the summer sun, so close you can feel the warm rocks. This is what we are bringing to you in a small bottle tinged with the blue of ice melt.
Field Lab brings you the experience of a place. This unique smell is distilled from a hike along the Timberline Trail, starting from the foothills of Mt. Hood up to the alpine meadows. Setting out from Timberline Lodge or better yet the Sandy River trailhead, the air is alive with Sitka Spruce, Noble Fir, Grand Fir, and Douglas Fir. Hiking up the trail, intermittent Incense Cedars accompany you until you step into a higher elevation and White Pines join in. When you reach the alpine meadows, a feathering of yarrow with their white umbels welcomes you and your achievement.
This special scent captures an afternoon hike of over 10 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 3500 feet. The Timberline Trail Field Notes is composed of essential oils distilled in our West Oakland facility from living Sitka Spruce, Noble Fir, Grand Fir, Douglas Fir, Incense Cedar, and a touch of Yarrow (which gives this Field Notes its characteristic blue color and grounds the smell in the understory of the Timberline Trail biome).
This Field Notes is for the memory of Hall Newbegin who hiked and loved the Timberline Trail. Thanks, Hall; you led the way.
