Two years ago, twenty-three pioneering brands gathered in California’s high desert to celebrate those who create, specifically the artist and craftsman. They were there to dance, drink, and party, but more importantly to share their passion for honest, well-made goods with like-minded entrepreneurs and fans. Juniper Ridge and Indigofera Jeans hoisted the freak flag high in Joshua Tree and Desert & Denim was born.
Originally envisioned as an antidote to tacky, gigantic, impersonal tradeshows, Desert & Denim was going to showcase a handful of hardwearing denim brands and US made menswear. The idea resounded so loudly among the industry that soon Desert & Denim grew to encompass womenswear, millinery, jewelry, natural dyers, vintage, repurposed and chain stitched clothing, natural skincare, home goods and more. People came from as far away as Sweden and Japan to showcase their wares.
On February 24th and 25th, 2017, we will continue this tradition with the third installment of Desert & Denim. We have grown larger (over 60 vendors) and have moved to the Pioneertown Motel in Pioneertown so we can stretch our legs, but the reason for gathering remains the same.
During the day, vendors meet with a selection of the best independent stores in the world, hang with fellow brand owners and craftspeople, and get the chance to talk one-on-one with fans. At night, the conversations continue around campfires and desert honky-tonks. Spirits are emboldened and creative fires stoked.
We’re happy to announce that for the first time, this year’s event is open to the public. On Saturday, everyone’s invited to browse the booths, shop, drink craft beers and wine, participate in workshops and demos, and meet the people behind your favorite artisan brands. No ticket necessary.
Also new to D&D3 are the Symposiums. Panel discussions will feature industry leaders covering topics like the impact of “fast fashion” and the importance of being USA Made in a global economy. Anyone can attend and share ideas in Q+A sessions after each talk.
We’ve added the Breakfast Club, for vendors only, with the hope of strengthening the celebration and support of our peers in the industry. At Breakfast Club, morning workshops and lectures will focus on trends and issues facing the modern owner-operated label.
What would Denim & Desert be without music and dancing? Expect fireside performances, acoustic sets from legendary musicians, amazing art and music at Taylor Junction gallery, and a raucous concert at Pappy & Harriet’s to close out the weekend.
Save the date and stay tuned for more details!
