From China to the British Isles to the native peoples of the Americas, mugwort is known the world over. It has been used in smudges, teas and sachets by many cultures for thousands of years. The mugwort used in this Field Lab tea is a species native to the West Coast, Artemisia douglasiana, found wherever there is plenty of sun and wet soil. But don’t overlook shady stream banks–mugwort is a hearty, adaptable plant.
Juniper Ridge has sustainably harvested mugwort for years for use in smudges. We return to the same areas and carefully tend the plants, never taking more than is good for the health of the ecosystem. We want to make sure we can return to the same patches for years to come. The mugwort in this Field Lab comes from the smudge rolling process. By bagging it in a tea, we make sure to use everything we harvest, reducing waste.
Mugwort has a reputation as a dream weaver. Purportedly, mugwort can induce lucid dreaming, reduce menstrual cramps, ease joint pain and cure headaches.* Before hops became popular, an herbal mixture including common mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) was used to flavor beer.**
