#SteepRavine – No electricity in these State Park cabins- wood stove, rain pelting the windows… A big storm blowing in from the Pacific Ocean tonight. Wind and rain, I’m thinking about the Redwoods swaying up on the mountain while I’m playing cards- very cozy in here.

#SteepRavineCabins my wife took the car and most of our food was in the car… All I have here is bacon, bread, good coffee, the NY times and a quiet, kid-free cabin by the ocean. Somehow, someway, I think I’m going to make it- I will survive.

Shhhh! Don’t tell the county people, but I’m busy cutting a new trail today through redwoods and chaparral on public land near my home. It’s actually an old trail that was in heavy use 100 years ago- I looked it up on the old maps. But now it’s completely overgrown and forgotten, and bit by bit I’m getting it back in shape. It’s so thick in here that sometimes I only go 20 or 30 feet in an hour. This is how I’m spending my day off? What’s wrong with me?

“I have been thinking more and more that I shall always be a lone wanderer of the wilderness. God, how the trail lures me…. And when the time comes to die I’ll find the wildest, loneliest, most desolate spot there is.” — Everett Ruess
